Shipping Industry and why it’s awesome
No matter how much technology evolves the shipping industry would never be dominated by machines or artificial intelligence. There will always be jobs in this field. If not directly in the shipping industry there are plenty of openings in NVOCC in Pakistan that book a container for you.
1. Its Good Money!
The shipping industry makes a huge profit that translates into good salary packages for its employees. With the fluctuating value of the currency, there is no straight number we can share. But yeah, its good money plus the experience to travel the world.
2. It’s a cheap alternative for companies
Shipping has become so mainstream these days that everyone wants their item to be sent via sea. It is so cheap that sending iPhone to China and having them shipped back is cheaper than manufacturing within the USA.
3. To the moon and back
The average distance a mega container ship travels during a year is equivalent to a 75% distance to the moon. Yet still, it’s cheaper than in house manufacturing!
4. Carrying capacity
A mega container ship has the capacity to carry 18000+ containers. If these containers are filled with bananas, you can transport 745 million. Which means one banana for every European.
5. It’s safe and secure
Shipping is the safest method of transporting your goods from one country to another. It is the most primitive form of trade that has been longer than air. The shipping industry is the first to follow widely implemented international safety standards.
6. Protects Environment
Sea shipping compared with air and road transportation has a lesser carbon footprint. Ships produce less carbon in contrast to each ton they transport. This eco-friendliness is growing more and more with newer and better ships.
7. The biggest ship in the world
The biggest cargo ship in the world is owned by OOCL Hong Kong that has a capacity of 21,000 TEU. This ship can carry more than 1800, 20ft containers. This is the most cost-effective ship right now. Because the more the ship can carry in one go the lesser traveling it needs and lesser fuel cost.
8. Loading and Docking Time
The loading and docking time for these ships is very high. Sometimes ships take hours to dock to the port. This is because of its huge size and slow speed. In some cases, 4 tug boats are required to maneuver the ship for docking. Loading and unloading take around 24 hours. This time is for ships that don’t have cells. Cells are designated spaces for containers with locks and holdings.
When the crane places a container in the cell it automatically locks and holds the container in place. This makes the process of loading and unloading faster. But 24 hours for both loading and unloading is not bad, have your export and import leave and arrive in your warehouse in 24 hours isn’t a bad deal.
9. No Wi-Fi
This shouldn’t come off as a surprise to you but there is no Wi-Fi on ships. Only 10% of the ships in the shipping industry have internet access. You can carry a satellite sim to stay connected on the ship or just wait for your ship to dock on a port with internet access.
10. Powerful Engines
Ships engines have the power to carry just about anything. With a horsepower of 107,390hp, these ships are capable of handling rough waters. But the speed at which these ships travel is 28 knots which means 41 km per hour.
11. Male workers industry
The shipping industry is dominated by male workers. This is because the majority of work requires heavy lifting both on the ship and on the port. There are only 2% of female workers in the shipping industry.
12. Shipping Containers can be transported further
If you want to ship your products to the deeper part of another country you can simply ship them via sea and have them further carried by transportation trucks. A shipping container can be carried easily with the help of carrier trucks.
13. Protecting your Product
Shipping containers are of different varieties. Some come with refrigerators installed to maintain the temperature of the product while some come with preservative gas chambers that can increase the life of your product. These containers can be open from the top, side or made out of bulletproof strong glass. It all depends on demand.
14. Theft Proof
Products exported through the sea is more theft-proof than air, road or train. This is because of the containers that are tightly sealed and protected. Being on the sea makes ships less prone to theft because it would require a large ship to carry the quantity in one container only.
15. Lastly, High Versatile
Although sea shipping is used to send goods from one part of the world to others. It can also be used for shorter distances. Due to their sealed nature shipping containers are best for transporting hazardous substances such as hydrocarbons and liquid chemicals.
