Most urban dwellers buying their first homes nowadays end up buying a 2BHK flat in a developing part of the city or in an area where there is still scope for new developments. A 2 BHK flat certainly offers the perfect solution for a comfortable residence but with time, the space usually starts looking too small to accommodate all the things that the family may need. Being an interior decorator and based in Kolkata, I am often tasked with making a 2 BHK flat look more spacious. When working on such an assignment, I follow a few of these smart space utilization hacks.
Using the vertical space:
Whenever I start decorating a 2 BHK flat to make it more spacious, the first thing I do is assess the vertical space so I can utilize the same to free up floor space. I try to achieve this by incorporating wall shelves, cabinets as well a corner spaces. You can always use the wall space very cleverly to make the room look stylishly decorated as well as spacious.
Finding multiple uses of an area:
In a compact 2 BHK flat, you may not always have the liberty to use each room for just one purpose and it is as such beneficial to use an area in multiple ways. Some examples of this multiple use are incorporating the Puja room within the living room, making a sleek library or a bar counter to cover a pillar, TV cabinets with in-built storage, wall mounted and retractable study tables and more. I have in fact even seen such inclusions in a few flats near Budge Budge which were put in place right from the beginning.
Using Mirrors to create an illusion of space:
This is a tried and tested method and can be seen in homes as well as commercial spaces. With the use of mirrors, a room can look more spacious. Fashionably styled geometric mirrors can always be placed on the living room walls, on the walls of the passages leading to different rooms, in the lobby and such strategic places. It is however important to note that mirrors indeed make a room look spacious, they play a very important role in balancing the energies of a space and as such, should be placed carefully.
Following an open layout:
If you want to make a flat look more spacious, you should try to make way for ample natural light and air. Having an open kitchen can make the living and dining room look more spacious. Another interesting way of making a flat more spacious is using box grills. While working on the interiors of some 2 BHK Flats for sale in Maheshtala, I saw how intelligently these have been used. Used as a cover for aluminum sliding windows these grilled enclosures beautifully extend the space. To further beautify the space, you can put beautiful planters on these grills too.
Balancing colour and light well:
Always try to use light pastel shades to make your house look bright and spacious. Darker colours do not bounce light well which makes a space look small and constricted which is why soft light colors with ambient lighting always work well.
With the use of these little tips and tricks you can always make your 2BHK apartment look more spacious. These ideas have always worked well for me and should help you too.
